This open, one-stage competition seeks to identify proposals for the redesign of the intersection of 9th Street and 4th AVenue in Brooklyn, NY. There are four overarching goals for the competition:

1. To encourage architects and planners to consider the social, cultural and health impact of design on a larger scale
2. To apply a green transportation hierarchy – pedestrians first, bicyclists second, cars third – to a specific site in our city
3. To expose a wider audience to the importance of design in creating a more livable New York
4. To encourage the city to adopt practical and innovative techniques for street development and to redevelop existing streets using these designs

To that end, the design should:

• Conceive an innovative plan that integrates mode uses in a manner that prioritizes pedestrians, bikes, then cars while ensuring the viability of this intersection as a transit hub (with subway and buses) as well as a node on the local truck route.
• Create compelling treatments for the space underneath the subway platform and the upper level cladding.
• Resolve potential modal conflicts that result from the variety of different users and activities on the road to create a world-class intersection.
